Join MCF and partners from Lathrop GPM for a quick dive into legal basics for foundations. This training program is developed for anyone interested in understanding the laws affecting grantmaking, including foundation staff, trustees and others involved in making charitable grants in Minnesota.

We’ll start the afternoon, 12:30 – 1:45, with Legal 101. Policies and laws constantly affect the work of philanthropists and grantmakers, making a solid grounding in the key rules critical to carrying out the work effectively.  Join us as we discuss the fundamentals for foundations, the different types of foundations and public charities, as well as current issues involving donor-advised funds, PRIs and other alternatives to grantmaking, fiscal sponsorships, grants to individuals, and building equity into grantmaking programs.

We’ll continue the afternoon, 2:00 – 3:00, with Governance 101. As stewards of the organization’s assets and mission, trustees or board members have a unique role in providing overall leadership and strategic direction of a grantmaking organization. Board members must carry out those roles consistent with their legal fiduciary duties of care, loyalty and obedience. But what does that mean in practical terms, and how can a trustee ensure they are effective in their role? The role of the board is informed by many sources, including legal standards, the interplay of responsibilities with the foundation’s executives and staff, the ability to rely on outside experts, and limitations on the liability of individual board members. Join us as we discuss foundation board governance fundamentals and best practices. Whether you are the key staff person working with trustees or you are a current board member – this session is for you.

Presenters: Catie Bitzan Amundsen, Partner and Greg Larson, Partner, Lathrop GPM LLP
