Purpose of Position
Reporting to the Executive Director (ED), the Director of Development serves as a key leadership team member and an active participant in making strategic decisions affecting Genesys Works Twin Cities (GWTC). This position is responsible for all fundraising and volunteer management, with support from a staff of two. The successful candidate will build Genesys Works Twin Cities’ visibility, impact, and financial resources.
The Director of Development will lead the strategy and execution to meet the current contributed income budget of $1.5 - $2.0M through the solicitation of major gifts, federal and state grants, special events, and corporate and foundation support. It is expected that the amount raised by Genesys Works Twin Cities will increase the amount raised by Genesys Works Twin Cities is expected to ease in future years as the Director strengthens the organization's overall fundraising capacity.
The Director of Development is responsible for setting the strategy and managing all fundraising activities, including the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of institutional gifts, sponsorships, and individuals. The successful candidate will expand and diversify Genesys Works Twin Cities’ donor base by strengthening the donor pipeline and working closely with the team, staff, and the revenue committee of the board to secure funding for new and existing initiatives. The ideal candidate will help further develop a culture of philanthropy at GWTC.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership and Financial Management
- Work with the Senior Leadership Team and the Board of Directors to develop and implement the overall financial strategy, annual budget, and operating plan.
- Create and monitor contributed income and expense budgets for development, fundraising events, and volunteer programs. Provide regular financial forecasts, with strategies for course-correction if needed.
- Partner with and support the Executive Director and the Governance Committee on board development activities.
Fundraising
- Direct all major fundraising initiatives, with the support and partnership of the Executive Director, staff, and Board members.
- Lead the creation and implementation of a comprehensive development strategy to include corporate and foundation grants, event sponsorships, government grants, individual major gifts, and associated cultivation and stewardship activities.
- Lead all major individual gift acquisition and renewal activities, with support from the Executive Director and Board.
- Oversee all event sponsorship activities, manage the event budget, and support the Manager of Development in managing event logistics. Generate sponsorships in partnership with the Corporate Partnership team.
- Oversee the development and execution of all grant proposals, supporting the Senior Manager of Institutional Giving in creating compelling narratives, developing budgets, and ensuring appropriate program staff are included to successfully implement and report on grant objectives.
- Grow and expand a fundraising culture to retain and steward existing donors and cultivate new relationships with philanthropic institutions and individuals.
- Collaborate with Genesys Works National Development Team lead on Development Operations and to coordinate local/national development efforts.
Management & Organizational Leadership
- Manage the Development team, which currently consists of one Manager and one Senior Manager, including prioritizing team and individual activities, conducting periodic performance reviews, and supporting goal-setting and professional development for direct reports.
- In partnership with the Director of Corporate Partnerships, serve as staff liaison to the Board Revenue Committee.
Qualifications
- Deep belief in organizational mission and a commitment to promoting diversity, equity and inclusion
- Eight years[RK1] of professional experience in a nonprofit organization with demonstrated success as a development leader and direct fundraiser with experience in a variety of fundraising sources,
- At least 2-3 years of people management and team leadership experience.
- Experience with event fundraising strategies and techniques to ensure strong viable events.
- Exceptional communication skills, both written and oral; ability to influence and engage a wide range of donors and build long-term relationships.
- Ability to think strategically and build successful fundraising strategies for growth
- Passion for building meaningful partnerships and drive for building meaningful relationships
- Strong project management competencies, including organizational and problem-solving skills,
- Excellent time management and attention to detail
- Ability to relate to and work with diverse populations in diverse settings
- Ability to work with computers and databases
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including occasional evenings and weekends
- Must pass a background check
- Ability to travel throughout the twin cities metro area, including locations inaccessible by public transit
- Bachelor's degree strongly preferred

Compensation and How to Apply
Starting annual salary for this position is $95,000 - $102,000. As an organization we value pay equity transparency for candidates and current Genesys Works staff. We offer market-based salaries that are based on local data. Comprehensive benefits package includes health coverage, paid time off, and (10) company holidays; a 403(b) retirement plan with company match; validated parking near the Genesys Works office in downtown St. Paul, and a communication allowance.
Genesys Works utilizes a hybrid structure, with an expectation that employees work both remotely and in-person at our downtown St. Paul office.
