We work in a field that most of us do not have professional training in. How do we make sense of working in philanthropy? What can we learn from the past that will inform how we move forward? What did some of the big philanthropies of the past do? What were their successes and failures, and what lessons can we take from them today?

If it is true that one cannot know where to go without understanding where they have been, then digging into our history is essential for our sector’s future. The work of transformation that we long to see in our communities starts with us. We must acknowledge the historical, social, and cultural influences that have shaped modern philanthropy. By examining the history of institutional giving in the United States, reflecting on who we are, where we come from, and the traditions we follow, we can forge a stronger and more self-aware sector.
