Readiness for 2020 Census is Challenged

Tuesday, November 29, 2016

Work to make sure the 2020 Census is done right and the future integrity of the American Community Survey is protected is underway now. Well, it is supposed to be. Repeated Congressional delays in funding are creating planning and testing setbacks -- including recent cancelation of testing targeting Native American reservations. There are additional concerns as whether or not the Census Bureau will be able to fully develop and test new systems to be used for the first time to collect responses from over half of the Americans from their computers, tablets and smart phones. A commentary in the Washington Post, "2020 Census -- Ready or Not? Bright Red Risk Now" addresses many of these concerns.  MCF has signed on to a letter to Congress from The Census Project to take special action during the current lame duck session to get back on track with its funding plan for the Census. MCF supports state and federal funding to ensure full participation in the 2020 Census in support of our inclusion and equity policy goal.
