Northwest Minnesota Foundation Plans Conference on Partnerships for Disaster Preparedness and Recovery

Monday, March 28, 2016

The Northwest Minnesota Foundation (NMF) is hosting a Community Disaster Response and Recovery Conference on June 7, 2016 that will focus on maximizing resources through partnerships and communication. The conference is being organized by NMF along with the Northwest Regional Development Commission and the Headwaters Regional Development Commission.

The conference offers strategies for effective community response and efficient resource management in times of crisis. Disaster recovery experts and emergency managers will share their experiences and lessons learned in dealing with disasters.

“Preparing our communities before disaster strikes in Northwest Minnesota is a top priority for us,” said NMF President Nancy Vyskocil. “Attending this conference will help local leaders develop relationships, build networks and leave with actionable tools to enhance community response and recovery by professionals and volunteers.”

The conference is open to the public. Emergency managers, volunteer groups, church leaders, non-profit organizations, law enforcement, public information officers, city and county officials, and public health officials are encouraged to attend.

Both Jennifer Olson of Northwest Regional Development Commission and Megan Fitzgerald of Headwaters Regional Development Commission agree that the efforts of multiple individuals are required for a community, county or region to fully respond to and recover from a disaster. “Everyone has a part to play,” said Fitzgerald. “Whether it’s learning from past incidents, affirming current partnerships or strategizing for a safer tomorrow, attendees will be able to help Northwest Minnesota prepare for, respond to and recover from disaster.”

The Northwest Minnesota Foundation received a grant from the Funders’ Network for The Philanthropic Preparedness, Resiliency and Emergency Partnership (PPREP) –a project of the Funders’ Network for Smart Growth and Livable Communities to support disaster preparedness, response and recovery learning cohort among 17 community foundations in an eight-state Midwestern region of the United States.

The conference will be held in Mahnomen at the Shooting Star Casino on June 7 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more information or to register, please visit www.nwmf.org, under upcoming events – click to see full calendar.
