The Northland Foundation approved 44 grants during the 2nd quarter of 2016, awarding a total of $237,242 to 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, schools, and other public entities to help support a thriving northeastern Minnesota.

Among the funding awarded was $15,000 to the Falls Hunger Coalition, International Falls, which will help support an innovative voucher program to allow food shelf clients to purchase milk and fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables. The “Bonus Bucks” come in $5.00 increments for people living in Koochiching County to buy fresh, healthy food locally.

“Fresh produce and milk are costly so they are often are the first items people cut from their diets when the budget is tight,” said Karina McLellan, executive director of the Falls Hunger Coalition. “Designating funds directly for these vital foods empowers our clients to maintain better nutrition for themselves and their families.

“The program is going incredibly well, and our clients are so grateful that we have it,” added McLellan.
