Northland Foundation Awards 36 Grants Totaling $393,720 to Benefit Northeastern Minnesota

Wednesday, January 22, 2020

During the last quarter of 2019, the Northland Foundation made 36 grants to nonprofit organizations, schools, community organizations, and distributed grants for child care expansion in the region with funding provided by the State of Minnesota.

Four grants were awarded within the Foundation’s “Individual and Community Wellbeing” priority area, for work related to diversity, equity, and inclusion and anti-racism. The Northeast Minnesota Office of Job Training, Virginia, received $3,700 to provide training in diversity, equity, and inclusion for career counselors at its CareerForce centers in the region; the Duluth Association for the Advancement of Colored People received $20,000 to strengthen the organization and its anti-racism work; the A.H. Zeppa Family Foundation, Duluth, was awarded $1,000 for programming to counter systemic injustice and advance inclusion; and the Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial, Duluth, received $11,000 to help commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Duluth lynching of Elias Clayton, Elmer Jackson, and Isaac McGhie.

“As we recognize Martin Luther King, Jr. this month and the movement he led to promote justice and equity for every person,” stated Erik Torch, Northland Foundation’s Director of Grantmaking, “it’s a fitting time to call attention to grant partners’ efforts to promote equity for all northeastern Minnesotans, regardless of race, creed, age, gender identity, ability, ethnicity, or socio-economic background.”
