For the last year, the Minnesota Council on Foundations has been working with our members to develop the resources and tools to encourage a wave of community investment as Minnesota prepares for an unprecedented transfer of wealth in the coming decades. MCF members recognized that by collaborating to develop a statewide approach and empowering foundations across all 87 counties with shared messaging and tools, we could have an amazing impact.

Together, we aim to spark collaborative engagement from nonprofits, community foundations and place-based funders, and individuals across the state with The Minnesota State Share.

With your commitment to local values, nonprofits and funders across the state can help donors participate in the Minnesota State Share and create a vibrant future for the towns, cities, and counties that make our state unique and beloved.

Get to Know the Minnesota State Share

Community foundations and place-based funders across Minnesota have a powerful opportunity to engage donors and strengthen local giving for generations to come. This interactive website will walk you through a brand-new toolkit and campaign designed to help you start and sustain meaningful conversations about the historic transfer of wealth happening in our state.

What's Available:

  • Messaging and engagement tools for nonprofits, community foundations and place-based funders, donors, and professional advisors
  • Tips on talking about giving now and through legacy gifts
  • Ideas to tailor the toolkit’s resources to your local context and audience

Why Get Involved:

  • When a local community can capture even a fraction of the assets set to be passed along in the coming years, it can unlock resources, activities, education, and ideas that benefit future generations.
  • Minnesotans get the chance to leave a meaningful legacy in the communities that shaped them—whether that’s their hometown, their “Up North” community, or their grandparents’ farmland.
  • By showing up as a trusted, local resource, organizations like yours can become key guides for donors who want to make sure their impact is truly local and deeply felt.

About the “Transfer of Wealth”:

The “transfer of wealth” captures Minnesota’s potential. It’s the entirety of assets projected to transfer from one generation to the next in the coming decades. Transfer from generation to generation is not unusual, but what’s new is that successors these days don’t often live where they grew up—when given only to successors, that wealth will leave the Minnesotan communities in which it was built.

A 2024 University of Minnesota Extension study identifies that Minnesotans’ current net worth amounts to $2.19 trillion. During the next decade, as baby boomers sell homes, farms, and transfer assets to the next generation, $61 billion of that total will change hands.

The research suggests that if communities can activate these assets, economic vitality will increase, and towns, cities, and counties across Minnesota will prosper. By keeping just some of that wealth in communities, older Minnesotans and their families can leave meaningful legacies in the places they’ve called home.
