A Message From Awale (Wally) Osman: Standing on the Right Side of History—Again

Standing on the Right Side of History

Last month, a formal petition was filed with the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn its 2015 ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges. It is the landmark decision that affirmed marriage equality as the law of the land.

While the Court has not yet decided whether it will hear this challenge, the petition itself is a direct assault on the dignity, safety, and humanity of our LGBTQ+ neighbors, colleagues, and family members. We will not be silent.

In 2012, Minnesota was one of the first states to reject a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage. It was a victory rooted in the belief that every person deserves equal treatment under the law, regardless of whom they love. That same resolve is needed today. The values that drove us then must guide us now.

The Minnesota Council on Foundations stands firmly in support of marriage equality and the rights of our LGBTQ+ communities. We are monitoring this situation closely and will be in touch as we navigate this challenge together. In the meantime, we encourage you to amplify and support the work of LGBTQ+ organizations in Minnesota, such as PFund Foundation and OutFront Minnesota, who are leading the charge in protecting and advancing queer and trans rights.

In solidarity,
