Larry Diffley Memorial Aviation Scholarship Awards Presented

Thursday, October 6, 2016

Two recipients of the Larry Diffley Memorial Aviation Scholarship were announced by the fund advisory committee. The scholarship fund provides annual awards to qualified applicants who plan to advance their flight training at Bemidji Aviation, have a deep passion for flying and intend to pursue aviation as a career.

Dawn Cook received a $1,000 award. She said, “This scholarship will be applied towards my goal of continuing my flight training and working towards my Certified Flight Instructor. I plan to spend summers and weekends giving the opportunity of flight to students. I was given a chance of a lifetime to take flying lessons and want to extend that opportunity to anybody else that wants to learn to fly.”

Sam Walsh, a recipient for a second time, received a $500 award. “I am currently working toward my Airframe & Powerplant (A & P) license with Aircorps Aviation in Bemidji, MN which specializes in the restoration of vintage and warbird planes. My goal is to complete my A&P license in the next two years. I passed the written exam for the Commercial License and have all of the hours except for the retractable gear time. Once that is completed, it is on to the Certified Flight Instructor checkride. My goal is to earn my CFI and Commercial before the end of the year.”

The scholarship fund was established by the family of Bemidji Aviation’s former President, Larry Diffley, to honor his passion for quality aviation training and helping others who intend to become professional pilots.
