Network Listserves

The Minnesota Council on Foundations sponsors a number of Grantmaker Networks, all of which utilize listserves as a way to encourage discussion and share information.

MCF listserves facilitate ongoing group e-mail discussions among subscribed network members or task forces and committees. Listserves can be a great resource if members participate on a regular basis. You can use the listserve to:

  • Share information and documents
  • Pose a question to the group
  • Discuss and brainstorm issues
  • Request assistance on a specific topic, problem or issue
  • Alert members about time-sensitive or other helpful information

You can begin using the listserve to communicate with your colleagues as soon as you’d like. Please refer to the Listserve Membership Policies below for information on using the listserve. We recommend you print and save this document for future reference.

If you have questions, comments or concerns about the listserve, please contact MCF at 612.338.1989 or email

The following policies apply to the listserve discussions conducted online:

  1. Participation in MCF’s listserve discussions is limited to list subscribers, who must be approved for list membership by a representative of the Minnesota Council on Foundations.
  2. Information shared in the listserve should be considered confidential, unless otherwise stated. List members should not forward any part of online discussions to others without group approval. MCF staff on the listserve will be held to the same confidentiality requirement.
  3. No organization seeking funding from listserve members will be discussed in relation to its grant proposals.

  1. Do not transmit anything in an e-mail message that you would not be comfortable writing in a letter or memo.
  2. As a courtesy, ask for permission from the source to quote anything written in the listserve.
  3. For ease of communication, please list your name, position and organization at the bottom of each message you send to the listserve.
  4. Out of consideration for your peers, please do NOT send your listserve reply to the entire group unless you think it will benefit everyone in the group. Do not send personal messages meant for one person in the group to the entire group.  (See Instructions below on Replying to Listserve Messages.)
  5. When you ask a question to the group, consider asking people to reply directly to you and not the entire list.  You can then post the message "25 people said yes, 5 said no" instead of everyone on the list receiving 30 messages.

-- Sending Messages to the Listserve:

If you want to pose a question or start a discussion among the whole group, send your message to the listserve email address. MCF listserves are not moderated, which means all messages sent through the listserve are posted automatically to everyone on the list without any staff review for content or appropriateness.

-- Replying to Listserve Messages:

When replying to a listserve message, you may:

  1. Reply directly to the individual who sent the message.
  2. Reply to all to respond to the entire list only if you think your answer or comment would be of interest to others on the list or would stimulate further discussion.

-- Changes/Questions:
