Free Programs Offered by National Center for Family Philanthropy

The National Center for Family Philanthropy (NCFP) is a national source of knowledge and expertise that advocates for the value of family philanthropy. Grounded by the perspective of donor families, NCFP has helped define this burgeoning field and raise awareness of its unique issues.

NCFP programming is offered as an exclusive benefit and resource for family foundations that are MCF members. NCFP provides research and learning opportunities that assist family foundations in achieving positive impact to the communities they serve. MCF members may access NCFP resources for family foundations by contacting Kristen Cullen, Member Engagement Manager, at 612.335.3417.

Below-Market-Rate Legal Support

Below-market-rate legal support is available to MCF members via the Foundation Legal Help Desk. The Help Desk is operated by the Indiana Philanthropy Alliance and made available to MCF members through MCF’s membership association, the United Philanthropy Forum.

The Help Desk provides answers to legal questions related to the operation of a foundation. Participants log in through a website portal and type their question. The on-call attorney will respond with a written answer through the portal or will arrange a phone conversation. The attorneys providing this service have specialized knowledge in grantmaking, scholarships, fund management, planned giving, nonprofit law, the Pension Protection Act, UPMIFA and other laws that affect the operations of a foundation.

The attorney will:

  • Limit answers to a maximum of one hour on any one question.
  • Advise the foundation if they need to engage counsel to assist them with a complex legal issue.
  • Engage with foundation staff or board members, but not with donors or professional advisors.
  • Review documents, but not prepare any documents.
  • Answer legal questions that relate to the operation of a foundation, but not legal issues facing grantees.

To request a registration form and subscription agreement, contact Belinda Gray, help desk administrator, Indiana Philanthropy Alliance. The cost is based on inquiries per year: $1,000 for 5 inquiries/year; $1,700 for 10 inquiries/year; $2,500 for unlimited access.
