GHR is at a pivotal moment in its history as its endowment will nearly double by early 2019 The foundation is seeking a Strategy Officer to help structure, support and guide the strategy work of the foundation.

Role Summary

The Strategy Officer will report to the Chief of Strategy and Programs and work closely with Initiative leads within the Program Team, the Director of Grants Management and Learning, other senior leadership including the CEO and COO to support, and over time, lead critical strategy projects within the foundation. The Strategy Officer will be expected to work fairly independently but in a deeply collaborative fashion, leading high-quality qualitative and quantitative analyses, synthesizing key insights and communicating those insights within the foundation.  This is a full-time staff position.

Specific Responsibilities:

The Strategy Officer will be expected to design, oversee and support the strategy review, refresh and/or development process for any given foundation Initiative. In order to carry out these functions, the Strategy Officer will be expected to:

  • Design an efficient, streamlined and tailored strategy process that will help assess past successes and learnings to date
  • Develop an understanding of the landscape and potential opportunities
  • Structure and lead data-driven analyses to develop recommendations for future initiative level and grant level investments
  • Help the initiative team craft a well-articulated, clear, and cogent set of recommendation(s) to GHR’s leadership, including its Board of Directors, on the best growth path for the initiative, as well as clear outcomes and metrics for measurement.

The first year of the Strategy Officer’s work will focus primarily on supporting the strategy review process of the foundation’s Children in Families initiative in partnership with the relevant Program Team staff. The first year will also involve a review of GHR’s faith-related efforts and assets. The first year may also involve scoping new programmatic areas for future investments. The Strategy Officer may also engage in other strategy and analysis projects undertaken at the foundation and other projects of the Program team.

Qualifications

We are seeking an individual who is skilled and open to working across all functions of the strategy process from problem structuring, data analysis, insight development, presentation development and engagement strategy as well as coaching and mentoring others.

The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical skills and be adept at building collegial relationships within the foundation and be able to respond to issues with clarity and diplomacy.  The right candidate will inspire and foster trust and confidence in other staff, the foundation’s leadership and be a person of integrity. 

We are seeking an individual with prior consulting experience, preferably at a top consulting firm, along with experience and sensitivity to working in the philanthropic and/or global development sectors.

Location and Travel

The Strategy Officer will be based out of the foundation’s Minneapolis office. It is not expected that the Strategy Officer will engage in extensive travel.
