Preparing for the Chauvin Trial: Understanding the Legal and Media Landscape

Friday, March 5, 2021
8:30am - 9:45am CST

As we approach the trial of Derek Chauvin, Minnesota will be in the international spotlight again. Join this virtual conversation where MCF members will get insights into the legal and media landscape. The conversation will help us to understand the context of the trial and its historic nature. Plus, we will have an opportunity to consider how philanthropy's response can frame the conversation going forward.

We will be joined by a retired district court judge, a local attorney, and representatives of local, regional and national media. Presenters will provide insights from their various vantage points, and engage in discussion and Q&A with MCF members. Topics will include issues such as: the decision to live stream the trial; the role of the Minnesota Attorney General; discussion of the City of Minneapolis strategy to hire social media influencers to tell the story of the trial; the trial's relationship to the federal grand jury, and more.

Featured speakers:

  • Shaun Floerke, President of the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation and recently retired district court judge
  • Satveer Chaudhary, Chaudhary Law Office, Secretary Minnesota State Bar Association Criminal Law Section Council
  • Matt Furber, an independent journalist who often covers breaking news for the New York Times in his capacity as a freelancer
