Power Moves for Advancing Equity and Justice

Monday, May 17, 2021 11:00am - 12:30pm CDT

Learn strategies for using the Power Moves tools to build, share and wield power for advancing equity and justice.

Our conversation will feature Edie Blakeslee, Vice President of Grantmaking & Community Leadership, and Herbert Drayton, Trustee, Coastal Community Foundation (CCF). The staff and board at Coastal Community Foundation were early adopters of the Power Moves tools and will share lessons learned, challenges and tips for success.

The Coastal Community Foundation’s process of healing, after the Mother Emanuel Massacre in 2015, is reminiscent of Minnesota’s process of healing after the murder of George Floyd. CCF’s actions focused on engaging the full foundation (not just grantmaking) and the entire community in its equity journey. Through this work, CCF decided to focus on power sharing as a path toward greater equity. Their deliberate learning process can be a guide and an example for Minnesota-based foundations, continuing on their own path toward greater equity and justice.

This peer conversation follows two previous MCF Member Briefings about the Power Moves tools, offered by the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy. This meeting is for MCF members who are interested in using Power Moves and those members who have started to use the tools. If you are wondering if Power Moves is right for you, check out the readiness assessment. Send questions about this session to Paul Masiarchin, pmasiarchin@mcf.org. Log-in information will be available in your confirmation email.
