Please join us for a meeting of the Minnesota Disaster Philanthropy Working Group. We'll be focused on disaster recovery and strengthening Minnesota's volunteer infrastructure to ensure volunteers are available to help vulnerable people recover following a disaster. At this meeting, we'll have a chance to learn from and talk with representatives from Minnesota Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (MN VOAD) and explore our state's disaster volunteer infrastructure in the context of the recent spring flooding. Strengthening MN VOAD to ensure a reliable volunteer infrastructure is available following disasters in Minnesota was identified as a key systems gap and priority for this working group. In close consultation with this working group and MN VOAD, MCF introduced legislation in the 2019 Minnesota legislative session to work toward this goal. We'll use part of the meeting time to provide an update on where the bill is at in the process and to do some planning on how we can work together to build support for the effort. The final meeting agenda will be posted in June.

The Minnesota Disaster Philanthropy Working Group is focused on: 

  • Engaging in peer learning and networking to support knowledge, skills, effectiveness, and best practices that support disaster and community resiliency-focused grantmaking
  • Providing coaching and mutual aid to peer funders around disaster philanthropy
  • Developing relationships and partnerships with other relevant players in the disaster response and resiliency space
  • Promoting awareness about how grantmakers can engage in addressing disasters among other grantmakers
  • Identifying gaps or opportunities in systems and offering advice about useful reforms and sharing these findings with MCF’s government relations and public policy committee

The working group’s activities are inspired by and complement the purpose and work of the ten-state PPREP (Philanthropy Preparedness, Resiliency & Emergency Partnership) learning cohort facilitated by The Funders Network for Smart Growth and Livable Communities and the Center for Disaster Philanthropy.

This working group is for MCF members interested in disaster and community resiliency. This is a MCF member-only meeting.

The meeting fee covers the cost of lunch at the meeting.
