Member Initiated Briefing: Securing Our Impartial Judiciary

Tuesday, June 11, 2019 - 8:00am to Wednesday, June 12, 2019 - 5:00pm CDT
Hilton Minneapolis,1001 Marquette Avenue S, Minneapolis, MN

For three years, the Piper Fund and re:power (formerly Wellstone Action) have held annual meetings to help community leaders learn about trends and tactics to effectively advocate for judicial independence, and to expand understanding on how to successfully build diverse and inclusive coalitions  to insulate state courts from special interests.

This year’s meeting will be in Minneapolis on June 11-12. Community representatives from two dozen states representing environmental justice, LGBTQI rights, good government and other groups will be participating. This two-day conference is open to MCF members who are interested in how this issue affects communities of color and our most vulnerable populations, and exploring strategies for addressing this issue through their grantmaking.

The keynote speaker is Lisa Graves, co-director of Documented and former Deputy Assistant Attorney General, U.S. Department of Justice. Representatives from the Brennan Center and advocates working on state judicial independence initiatives will also be presenting.

While federal court cases often generate the biggest headlines, 95 percent of cases nationwide are heard at the state level. It is the state courts that most often have the final say on significant decisions affecting millions of us – including communities of color and our most vulnerable populations.

This MCF member initiated briefing is co-hosted by Proteus Fund, Voqal, and Minneapolis Foundation. MCF public policy advances the goal of creating prosperity through inclusion and equity, supported by a policy principle of strengthening democratic systems and civic engagement.

The program for each day of this two-day conference will be from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. MCF members should register through the MCF web site to participate. After you register, you will receive a detailed agenda and additional logistics information directly from the hosts. Inquires can be directed to Kathy Bonnifield at the Proteus Fund.
