Member Initiated Briefing: Getting Ready for the Next America

Friday, May 31, 2019
8:00am - 9:30am CDT
Saint Paul and Minnesota Foundations,101 Fifth Street East, Suite 2400 Saint Paul, Minnesota

Ray Suarez is one of the country’s most respected news reporters and author.  He has been digging deep into the census and considering the changes ahead. It has him wondering if we will still be E Pluribus Unum if U.S. Census Bureau projections carry out and we shift from being a European-descent majority to a majority from Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

With Census Day less than one year away, April 1, 2020, Minnesota grantmakers have the census and its implications on their minds, too. MCF members are actively involved with getting the state ready for the 2020 Census through the work of the Minnesota Census Mobilization Partnership. The Trump Administration’s approach to the census is raising big questions, with the biggest one getting the attention of the Supreme Court! Will we still see this “next America” with census that includes a citizenship question and other changes affecting how the Census Bureau administers the 2020 decennial census?

Suarez’ reporting has covered the range of issues driving change in American Life, including race, immigration, demographic shifts, and the role of religion in public life. He will bring his census-driven research along with four decades of experience covering stories for NPR, PBS NewsHour, and Al Jazeera into this lively presentation and discussion.

This MCF member initiated briefing is co-hosted by Saint Paul and Minnesota Community Foundations, Thrivent Foundation, and the Southwest Initiative Foundation, and is presented in coordination with Interfaith Action of Greater Saint Paul.

Breakfast service will begin at 8 am. Program will begin at 8:30 am.
