MCF Member Briefing: Criminal Justice Reform and Public Safety

Wednesday, June 8, 2022 10:30am - 11:30am CDT

What is philanthropy doing and how can you get involved?

Join this discussion to hear about the impetus behind Justice for All, its launch, goals and learnings to date.

Session attendees will be invited to consider the question: where might you see yourself in advancing criminal justice reform? Statewide system transformation happens through various actions. For those who are interested, you may consider several opportunities including narrative change, advocacy, community learning and funding. It requires each of us to move beyond the fear of discomfort.

Racism and discrimination have no place in our society. And yet, racism and discrimination are woven into the fabric of the criminal justice system across Minnesota.

In 2020, various philanthropic organizations came together to stand up for equity by forming Justice for All, a multi-year collaboration between the Greater Twin Cities United Way, the Minneapolis Foundation and the Saint Paul & Minnesota Foundation.

The collaboration is centered on the belief that listening, learning and leading alongside people directly affected by the criminal justice system – those who have been incarcerated, on probation, arrested, their families and their communities – will not just reform, but transform, the system throughout the state of Minnesota.

Presenters and Facilitators:

  • Chanda Smith Baker, Chief Impact Officer and Senior Vice President, Minneapolis Foundation
  • Acooa Ellis, Senior Vice President of Community Impact, Greater Twin Cities United Way
  • Anil Hurkadli, Senior Vice President, Community Impact, Saint Paul & Minnesota Foundation
