Grantmaker Conversations: Discovering New Ways to Work #2

Tuesday, June 23, 2020 1:00pm - 2:00pm CDT

Join your MCF peers as we talk about the questions and considerations arising for grantmakers in a changing environment. With the health crisis comes the need to conduct our work virtually and to focus on a new set of community needs. With the economic crisis comes the need to reconsider the meaning of nonprofit sustainability, the purpose of reviewing financial data and measuring the impact of changing programs. From many angles, the work of the grantmaker is more complicated and more important. Through peer-discussion, these sessions will offer opportunities to hear how others are thinking about these questions as we prepare for long-term uncertainty.

Conversation 1: How to Effectively Review Grant Proposals: Tuesday, June 16, 1:00 – 2:00

This conversation will allow participants a chance to talk about grant proposals. We’ll think about past-year financials (do you still ask for them?), program dollars (how do you determine need?), overhead (what does that mean anymore?), organizational sustainability (how can it be measured?), and related grantmaking topics. Come ready to ask questions and share your ideas for ensuring effective philanthropy in uncertain times. This conversation will be initiated by Aretha Green-Rupert, Regional Director, Otto Bremer Trust.

Conversation 2: How to Effectively Conduct Site Visits: Tuesday, June 23, 1:00 – 2:00

This conversation will allow participants a chance to talk about the site visit in a virtual world. How is a site visit still useful? Who do you include? How do you see what’s happening on the ground? When do you visit in-person? And how do you show grace in a time of limited funding and unlimited needs? This conversation will be initiated by Andreas Hipple, Executive Director, Better Way Foundation and Dominic P. Papatola, Senior Program Officer, Otto Bremer Trust.

This is a members-only event. Register for either or both dates; and attend both sessions. The same webinar log-in information will be used for both sessions. Details will be provided in your confirmation email.
