As stewards of the organization’s assets and mission, trustees or board members have a unique role in providing overall leadership and strategic direction of a grantmaking organization. Board members must carry out those roles consistent with their legal fiduciary duties of care, loyalty and obedience. But what does that mean in practical terms, and how can a trustee ensure they are effective in their role? The role of the board is informed by many sources, including legal standards, the interplay of responsibilities with the foundation’s executives and staff, the ability to rely on outside experts, and limitations on the liability of individual board members. Join us as we discuss foundation board governance fundamentals and best practices. Whether you are the key staff person working with trustees or you are a current board member – this session is for you.

Presenters: Catie Bitzan Amundsen, Partner and Sarah Duniway, Partner, Lathrop GPM LLP
