International affairs grants go to
organizations that promote international understanding; provide
international development and relief services; and address
international human rights, peace and security, and other related
issues. International affairs grants may go to organizations located
within or outside the U.S.
Information in this fact sheet is based
on an analysis of 27,243 grants of $2,000 or more, made by a sample
of 100 of the largest grantmakers in Minnesota. The total giving of
these 100 large grantmakers accounted for approximately 82 percent
of all grant dollars paid in the state in 2007, the latest year for
which complete data are available.

How Much is Granted to International Affairs?
Grantmakers in the sample gave $19.2 million to international affairs in
2007, up from $16.3 million in 2006. Funding for this subject area grew 17
percent from 2006 to 2007, making this one of the fastest growing fields.
However, the share of grant dollars dedicated to international affairs was 2
percent in 2007, making it the smallest category among the eight subject
areas.
Where Do International Affairs Dollars Go?
Consistent with previous years, the international development/relief
services subcategory received the largest share of the sample’s
international affairs grant dollars, at 62 percent. The other international
affairs subcategory received the second largest share, at 28 percent.
International human rights received 4 percent, promotion of international
understanding received 3 percent, and international peace and security
received 2 percent of the grant dollars within international affairs.
What Types of Grantmakers Fund International Affairs?
In 2007, private foundations in the sample continued to provide the largest
share of grant dollars to international affairs, at $11.6 million; this
represents a 13 percent increase from 2006. Giving by corporate grantmakers
grew to $2.5 million, a significant increase from 2006. Community/public
foundations provided $5.1 million to international affairs, a decline of 5
percent from 2006.

These five grantmakers gave 73 percent of all dollars given to international
affairs by the sample in 2007:
