How Much Do
Minnesota Grantmakers Give to Health?
Minnesota's grantmakers gave an estimated $81 million to health in 2004 (the latest year for which data is available). This amount represents 11 percent of the share of Minnesota's total grants given that year.
Where Do Health
Dollars Go?
In 2004, General and Rehabilitative Health received 66 percent of grant dollars, followed by Mental Health/Crisis Intervention at 14 percent and Multipurpose Health at 12 percent.
How Does Health Giving in Minnesota Compare to National Giving?
Health grantmaking at the national level has generally had almost a 50-percent higher share of grant dollars than the state level. In 2004, the share of Minnesota grant dollars to Health rose by 3 percent. Besides incremental growth, the large improvement is attributable to a $20-million grant from the Blandin Foundation to the Grand Itasca Clinic & Hospital, some $4 million in Health grants from E.M. Pearson Foundation, and the first year that Healthier Minnesota Community Clinic Fund was included in the Giving in Minnesota sample.*
Which Grantmakers Fund Health?
Private foundations continue to account for the highest share in Health grant dollars, 63 percent. These foundations increased their share of Health grants following a two-year decline. The large increase in share of giving can be attributed to grantmaking by three private foundations: Blandin Foundation, E.M. Pearson Foundation and the Healthier Minnesota Community Clinic Fund. Corporate foundations and giving programs saw their share of Health grant dollars drop from a 36-percent share in 2003 to a 20-percent share in 2004, as private foundations gained a stronger share position. Community/public foundations have historically had the lowest share of Health grant dollars among the three grantmaker types. In 2004, they saw a 9-percent decrease from 26 percent in 2003 to 17 percent in 2004, again related to the growth in share by private foundations.
Who Are Minnesota's Largest Health Funders?
Minnesota's five largest Health grantmakers in 2004 were Blandin Foundation, Minnesota Partnership for Action Against Tobacco, E.M. Pearson Foundation, The McKnight Foundation and The Minneapolis Foundation.
Figures based on a sample of the largest 110 grantmakers in the state making $1 million or more in grants. Minnesota grantmaking figures come from MCF's Giving in Minnesota, 2006 edition; national figures from The Foundation Center's Foundation Giving Trends, 2006 edition.
