How Much Do Minnesota Grantmakers Give to Arts, Culture and Humanities?
Minnesota grantmakers gave a total of $114 million to Arts, Culture and Humanities organizations in 2005 (the latest year for which information is available). The
16-percent share of total Minnesota grant dollars is an increase of 1
percent from 2004.
Where Do Arts, Culture and Humanities Dollars Go?
The Performing Arts and Museums subcategories continued to receive the
highest share of grant dollars among Arts subcategories in 2005 (33 percent
and 18 percent, respectively). Both subcategories saw declines in their
shares of grant dollars between 2004 and 2005, with Performing Arts' share
decreasing by 2 percentage points and Museums' share decreasing by 3
percentage points. Other Arts/Cultural Organizations experienced the biggest
jump in share of grant dollars of all Arts subcategories, with an increase
of 6 percentage points (from 11 percent to 17 percent) between 2004 and
2005.
How Does Arts Giving in Minnesota Compare to National Giving?
Minnesota's share of 2005 grant dollars going to the Arts (16 percent) was
slightly higher than the national average (13 percent). Minnesota has had
more fluctuations in shares of Arts grant dollars than has been true
nationally. At the state level, the Arts' share has gone up or down by
several percentage points every few years since 1992, until steady growth
began in 2002. Nationally, Arts' share of total grantmaking has been either
12 or 13 percent since 1997.
Which Grantmakers Fund Arts, Culture and Humanities?
In 2005, private foundations and corporate foundations and giving programs
each provided 44 percent of the grant dollars for the Arts, while
community/public foundations contributed 11 percent. The distribution was
almost the same as in 2004. Arts was the only subject area in which
corporate grantmakers gave the largest share of grant dollars by type in
2005, and likely reflects Minnesota's long history of strong corporate
support for the Arts.
Who Are Minnesota's Largest Arts, Culture and Humanities Funders?
Minnesota's five largest arts funders in 2004:
- Target Foundation and Corporation
- The McKnight Foundation
- Bush Foundation
- The Saint Paul Foundation
- The Minneapolis Foundation
Figures based on a sample of the largest 100 grantmakers in the state in 2005,
representing 78 percent of the state's total giving. Minnesota grantmaking figures come from MCF's Giving in Minnesota, 2007 edition; national figures from The Foundation Center's Foundation Giving Trends, 2007 edition.
